After being fully booked for 2 months in advanced after opening this 1st time event for the club the time to depart has finally arrived – everyone shared their excitement and tribulation on the WA group but turned out that every misfortune was handled in time. Pierre sorted his battery problem and Debbie organised herself a loan bike at a Thursday braai!! The itinerary was set, the route was planned to include some towns for the Alphabet Challenge and yes, we missed Immerpan.
13 Enthusiastic go getters (11 riders and 2 pillions) arrived at Rose Haven Shell – departure 6:30 for 7:00am and for a few members it was an early rise to ensure to be filled up and to be on time for departure!
Roelf and Riana decided to take it slow as Blikkies (the 310 and new addition to the GS family) still needed to be “run in” and could only handle the speed limited of 100km (only for now). The other felt it was safe to take it to the speed limit and enjoy the ride.
Our first break was breakfast at Ruby River Lodge close to Loskopdam and filled up our mean machines in Roethan to ensure arriving in Haenertsburg on time – we arrived in Haenertsburg at 14:00 and everyone was very impressed with their living arrangements at the Pennyfather. This venue is highly recommendable. Blikkies arrived ± 60 minutes later where after some decided to enjoy the real heritage (the old cemetery), or to take a power nap and then the ones who decided to explore the heritage of Haenertsburg in the form of some pub crawling! We all met up at the Ion Crown for supper which was enjoyed in a delightful manner – this is the amazing thing so many different people enjoying 1 specific thing – FOOD !! followed by drinks, loads of humour and jokes to be shared – we are after all a club of shared riding pleasures!
After the “slow steaks” (yes they call it slow steaks as its served with a few snails and garlic butter – yum-yum) fish, burger and salads we retired to the Scholtz adobe for a night cap. This cap was served in a special printed tin cup “ Haenertsburg 2018” compliments from GusProp (Gustav & Sandra) to thank everyone for joining us and making this trip memorable! An early night was in sight for everyone as an early start was intended for Gustav, Theo and their Harlem! Others decided to take it easy and went straight back on the N4.
At 7:30 the adventurers decided to go long way around and took on the road through Tzaneen and Letsitele. We enjoyed breakfast at the Mad Boyz Café with loads of curios and an awesome elephant scull that walked the earth many moons ago. We took a quick photo at Magoebaskloof view point (Melanie was a bit of a slow steak and had a roll over – luckily nothing serious) and then the JG Strijdom tunnel. Exiting and enjoying the switch back roads of this province!
We all arrived home safe after travelling ±930km to enjoy something we all love! Thank you, Gustav (Leader of the pack) Theo (Sweep 1) and Debbie (Sweep 2) for keeping all safely tucked in line. To everyone else: Judie, Melinda, Melanie, Roelf & Riana, Pierre & Antoinette, Gerrie & Louise – you are just an awesome bunch of people! Till we meet again!
Thank you all for this marvelous tip!
