Dear Dirt Riders

We would like to invite you on an exciting dirt-riding long weekend to Kaapsehoop in Mpumalanga. The town’s location at the top of the Kaapsehoop mountain pass, surrounded by forests and plantations, makes it the perfect location for an unforgettable motorcycle weekend.

This small town is situated at 1486m above sea level on the Highveld escarpment. It was orginally named the Devil's Waiting Room because the outcrop of strangely formed rocks said to look like monsters waiting for the devil. When gold was discovered in 1882 the name was changed to Kaapsche Hoop due to the hope that it brought the inhabitants of the nearby De Kaap Valley.

The town is known for its spectacular scenic environment, fascinating rock fields, mysterious mist, as well as the elusive wild horses that roam freely for over 100 years.

Itinerary
Friday 9 August

We will depart at 7:00 for 7:30 on Friday 9 August from Sasol Rosehaven North on the N4 (NOT from the usual BP garage).
At around 8:30 we will stop at Alzu Petroport for a quick breakfast.
A few kilometres after Alzu we will leave the tar and start with our gravel route for the day. This will take us through some of the most beautiful parts of Mpumalanga as we slowly ascend the Highveld mountains.

We will travel through one of Sappi’s forests (with a permit) along the serpentine twists and turns of the thrilling Clivia Pass. Certain sections of the pass have a gradient of 1:5 and is said to have humbled many egos (the steep sections are now tarred).

The final stretch is via the stunning Kaapsehoop mountain pass and onto our destination for the weekend, the Kaapsche Hoop Guesthouse, where we will meet up with our Tar riding friends.

If time permits on Friday afternoon, you can explore the town on your own and maybe spot the legendary wild horses. On Friday evening we will enjoy a dinner at the renowned Bohemian restaurant.

Saturday 10 August
On Saturday morning we will leave right after breakfast for an excellent dirt riding day. We will ride in the direction of Barberton travelling via well maintained plantation roads.

From Barberton we will ride south towards Swaziland where we will explore the Barberton Geotrail in the Makhonjwa Mountains. Some of the oldest exposed rock formations on earth (estimated at 3.6 billion years) can be seen on this route. The mountain range also yielded some of the oldest undisputed signs of life on Earth, which led to the area being known as the “Genesis of life”.

We will ride through the mountains and down the Swaziland border along the Diepgezet mountain pass. This pass twists and turns its way down 738 meters of altitude and provides dramatic views of towering mountains and green valleys. It takes us to the lost and forgotten “ghost town” called Diepgezet (now known as Msauli village) where we will stop for a coffee break.

When leaving Diepgezet we will ride through/on the abandoned golf course, then travel back up the pass and turn north before Barberton onto the Shiyalongubo mountain pass that criss-crosses through the Barberton Nature Reserve in the direction of Lows Creek. From there we will ride in the direction of Nelspruit and then back to Kaapsehoop. We will stop for lunch somewhere along the way.
Saturday evening we will enjoy a well deserved braai at our guesthouse.

Road condition
Both days’ ride will be Green with Orange sections on the plantation roads. Timber trucks and rain might leave a few ruts, as well as exposed loose rocks in the road. Orange riders and experienced Green riders will enjoy the ride (not for inexperienced dirt riders). It is pillion friendly for experienced pillions.

Mandatory costs
1) Guesthouse: R500 per person per night bed and breakfast.
2) Saturday evening braai for R180

Other costs:
1) Friday breakfast at Alzu Spur
2) Friday evening dinner at Bohemian
3) Saturday lunch
